Our Adult Taijutsu classes are a great way to get some exercise and learn valuable self-defense skills. Developed over 900 years ago in feudal Japan, Ninpo Taijutsu utilizes natural body movements and will improve your balance, coordination, and flexibility. Our classes take place in a clean, safe, and constructive environment. Students progress through our program at their own pace while working together in order to learn this traditional Japanese martial art.
Taijutsu is based on using superior body position, leverage, and accuracy of movement in order to negate the importance of size and strength. As such it is well suited to men and women of all sizes. Ninpo Taijutsu is a well-rounded, practical martial art. We study evasion, striking, and grappling and encourage our students to focus on the basic movements found in each technique rather than the end result. While studying this art, you will also learn about ancient Japanese culture, etiquette and language. This provides a context for understanding how the art was originally developed and historically utilized. We do not glorify fighting, nor participate in competitions. Instead, we choose to focus on the significant self-improvements which result from martial study: confidence, awareness and discipline.
Each class is unique but a typical class will begin with practicing our rolling and falling (taihenjutsu), followed by examining a technique or pattern chosen by the instructor. The second half of class is generally dedicated to partner-work, in which students pair up and practice the techniques in their respective levels while the instructor observes and assists as needed. Other frequent class components include kihion (repetitive fundamental drills to improve basic movements) and randori (random attacks to encourage improvisation of learned skills).
All study is undertaken with extreme respect for the safety of our students. We insist that our students learn the self-control necessary in order to perform techniques in a safe way during practice and find that teaching the ability to control speed, intensity, and targeting vastly improves our students’ understanding of each technique.
